State of Emergency
Fashion has been reinvented through generations, wars, and depressions. Some key designers changed what the world wore, with designs born from war. Dior brought fabric back with long skirts and dresses, at a time when war conservative Paris considered plentiful fabric quite wasteful; he crafted dresses that accentuated a woman’s curves and flattered her femininity. His became the new look after the war. Yves Saint Laurent became famous for that androgynous look; his women wore clothes traditionally intended for men.
Chanel brought comfort to women’s clothes, in a time of war when more women were sent to work in factories. She revolutionized the corset; iconized the little black dress; designed more structured garments, with easy materials; and made trousers and short skirts fashionable. Here we recreate some of these designer looks, with clothing from Carnaby Street (Trincity Mall and Excellent City Centre); and make-up and styling by MAC (West Mall).
